HISTORIC ORIGINS

LION Coffee roared into life in 1864, introducing the fine "fancy roasting" of coffee in Toledo, Ohio. While in most households, crude mixes of raw coffee beans were being scorched in frying pans, LION Coffee revolutionized the taste of coffee with the careful roasting and blending of the best beans from around the world.

In the 1870's LION pioneered new standards of freshness, sealing roasted beans into one-pound bags emblazoned with the distinctive LION trademark. Families cut out and collected LION head seals and redeemed them for such whimsical gifts as paper dolls, popular sheet music, educational games and trading cards.

News of LION Coffee's quality "cup that cheers" spread quickly. By the mid-1890's the company roasted a million pounds a week and had become one of the largest coffee companies in the world. After decades of success, LION Coffee was ambushed by hunters (disguised as business insiders). The LION was forced into retreat...

The noble LION lay dormant until 1979, when James Delano, an ardent fan of American memorabilia with a passion for fine coffee, tracked down the LION and relocated the company to Honolulu, Hawaii. The LION awoke to discover a new home in the islands of aloha!
